A-Z: Classic Monsters: G is for Godzilla

It's week two of the A-Z Challenge.  How's everybody doing so far?  "G" is the letter for today's post and my topic is about the classic monster, Godzilla.

About Godzilla

According to Wikipedia, "Godzilla is a 1954 Japanese science fiction kaiju film produced by Toho, directed by Ishirō Honda, and featuring special effects by Eiji Tsuburaya. The film stars Akira Takarada, Momoko Kōchi, Akihiko Hirata, and Takashi Shimura. The plot tells the story of Godzilla, a giant monster mutated by nuclear radiation, who ravages Japan and brings back the horrors of World War II's nuclear devastation to the very nation that experienced it first-hand. It was the first of many kaiju films released in Japan, paving the way and setting the standard for future kaiju films, many of which feature Godzilla."

Why is he a phenomenon?

I have no idea?  You?  Would you consider him a classic monster?  He's more of a beast than anything else, but he's definitely a classic.

What's new?

Godzilla has been redone about a billion times.  Comic books, cartoons, television series and the list goes on and on...  And guess what?  Hollywood is doing it again.  Set to release on May 16th, the classic film stars Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Elizabeth Olsen.  This movie is getting some serious buzz.

Godzilla Extended Trailer Released

Godzilla starts May 16th.  Check out the latest trailer just released last week.

Do any other classic monsters come to your mind besides Godzilla?  Hope you have a great week.

He is THE classic monster! Between living in Japan when I was little and watching Saturday Monster Matinee, I became a big fan. So stoked for the upcoming movie.

In a college class I took on "apocalyptic themes in film and TV," our prof insisted that Godzilla was a metaphor for what we did to Japan in WWII. In which case I think it's hilarious how much time and effort Americans have put into remaking it....

Hollywood is doing Godzlla again?! Let's hope they do a better job this time than the last version. I remember Gozilla thanks to the cartoon reruns in the 80's where he helped people, and they had Godzuke as well :)

The coming Godzilla movie actually looks like fun. It can't be any worse than the Matthew Broderick abomination.

Great post, I love monsters and Godzilla holds a special place in my radioactive heart.

I think this Godzilla movie will be excellent. I didn't know Alex lived in Japan when he was young. See what you learn in this challenge?

Godzilla is definitely a classic. I grew up with the cartoon on children's TV :). I didn't really like the Matthew Broderick version, but I've never been sure why. I hope the new version does well.

Loved, loved, loved Godzilla movies!! I will admit to being extremely excited for the new one. The last one (with Mathew Broderick) was good, but not 'mind blown' good.

I'm hoping the new one is mind blown good. :)

Everyone seems to know of Godzilla, even people like me, who've never seen anything with him in it, so yes, I'd classify him as a classic monster!
