Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows: The Cheese Factor Continues

I was so looking forward to Tim Burton & Johnny Depp’s take on the classic 60/70’s paranormal soap opera, Dark Shadows.  Despite all the negative reviews, I decided to check it out last night.  *sigh*  I’d have to say, the one thing the original, the 90's remake and Tim Burton's take have in common is they’re cheesy as all get out! The only thing that would have made it more cheesier is if Chester cheetah himself made a cameo—instead of McDonald's.
Aside from that, the movie was bleh.  Part morose and part family drama, Dark Shadows was riddled with humor which I found confusing.  Don't get me wrong, I laughed, but still either you're a comedy or a drama.  Look, I love Tim Burton so much it’s heartbreaking when his movies don’t measure up.  Sadly, the truth is not every film he makes will be legendary. Not every one he produces or directs will be an instant cult classic.  As much as I’d like to wave his flag, this was not a win.  It was okay. The cheesiness was there, the plot eh, but other than that, the vampire paranormal family drama was only slightly mollifying.  Should you go and see it?  If you love Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, sure…why not?  Just keep your expectations in check.

What about you? Have you seen it? What did you think? Am I way off?

Yeah, I've heard a lot of people were disappointed in this movie. I got that meh feeling when I saw the trailer. I think this is one I can live without seeing. Thanks for an honest review. (:

I keep hearing nothing but bad things about this film. Too bad.

Haven't seen it, was planning to. Might do it on a 2 for 1 day so at least I'm not paying full price if it's going to leave me with a 'bleh' taste in the mouth.

I haven't seen it yet but I thought it was cheesy from the trailers.

Fred looks beat!
Something about Dark Shadows just looked off to me so I skipped it. Bummer it doesn't live up to his other films, because I do dig Burton movies. I wasn't crazy about Alice in Wonderland either, but then I've never liked that children's tale.

Okay...well it's official, Dark Shadows may be the worst move for Johnny Depp in his long and illustrious career.

I enjoyed watching Dark Shadows. My main problem with it was that half the funny lines were used in the commercials, so I could about quote them before they were even said...

Other than that, after the movie I realized how underdeveloped some things were, probably because it's a TV series being remade into one film.

Mina, I keep hearing the same sort of thing. But your bit about cheesiness was a fresh take! I wont be seeing it. Johnny Depp just freaks me out anyway in his Tim Burton get ups, I like him clean and manly. :) And that Fred is too darn cute! He must be spoiled rotten.

I haven't seen Dark Shadows yet, and unfortunately, don't intend to. :-s I love Tim Burton, too, but his most recent projects have been pretty bad and I'm wondering what's going on with him. I was sooo excited for Alice In Wonderland, but then when I finally got the chance to see it, I couldn't even finish it. And I agree with Donna - I'm not fond of seeing Johnny Depp ALL THE TIME in those freaky get-ups! I think it's just getting old. :-(

Oh, I'm disappointed that so many people aren't loving this movie. The previews looked good. I may have to wait for it to come out on DVD.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I know Dark Shadows is supposed to be cheesy. That's part of its charm. But based on the trailers, I predicted the film would be disappointing. I didn't think the trailer was funny at all. The best lines were:

"Are you stoned?"
"Oh, they tried to stone me. It didn't work."

And if that was the best they had ... then, well.

I was, however, willing to be proved wrong. I like Tim Burton, and I love Johnny Depp, and I imprinted on Dark Shadows when I was just a kid. It should have been good. It should have.

Let's stone the screenwriters.

this is really too bad. I was hoping it would be as good as I imagined the old series was.

Ha! I totally want to see this movie! Good to have your warning though... Bring on the cheese! And congrats to Jessica!!!!

That sucks...I was really looking forward to that movie. But maybe, with my expectations now in the basement, I'll love it! Maybe not.

I agree with you Mina. Cheesy is the perfect word for the film. I also love Tim Burton, but this is not his best. He needs to spend more money on good writers as oppose over exposed Hollywood Stars. I really like his animation...Hi Fred.

That's too bad, it could've been really cool. I'll probly wait for the dvd.

Fred's just resting up for the weekend!

when my daughter and i heard they were making a movie of dark shadows--we were so excited and then when we heard it was going to be a comedy--we thought, what a tragedy--i think if i saw it, the only highlight would be the cameos, i heard, the original case was making!

I wasn't grabbed by the trailer either. I hope Depp and Burton aren't getting complacent that every film they make together must be genius?

Also, I know they didn't come up with it, but the title annoys me. Dark Shadows is a tautology!

Congrats to Jessica T and all the writers who are releasing books...

I enjoyed reading the good news.

I've been hearing bad things about Dark Shadows. I'm still willing to see it.

I enjoyed Dark Shadows, though I can't say it was a flawless film. I can't quite grasp why a supposedly besotted Barnabus was getting it on with two chicks other than his love object, and why the developing romance with his love object wasn't really explored. The fish out of water aspect was amusing, and it was, as one might expect, visually gorgeous. I'm glad I saw it on the big screen, though I do agree that it wasn't a Burton/Depp best.

Some Dark Romantic

I was very disappointed in Dark Shadows. In fact, according to my husband, I owe him big time for making him lose 2 hours of his life...lol. I had such high hopes for this remake and was let down. At one point my hubby and I looked at each other and asked "Did we fall asleep and miss something? This doesn't make sense." Had I not wanted to completely waste the money we spent, we would have just left after about halfway through.
It was definitely cheesy and will never find a home on my movie shelf.
