A-Z: Classic Monsters: C is for Creature from the Black Lagoon

My A-Z post on Classic Monsters features the letter "C" today and the monster my husband suggested was the Creature from the Black Lagoon.  Why?  Because he is without a doubt a considered a classic monster in this genre.

Who is the Creature from the Black Lagoon? 

The Creature from the Black Lagoon, also known as the Gill-man was based on folklore of sea monsters which were "half-fish and half-human that lived in the Amazon river."  Now, I've also heard the Gill-man was most likely an alien sighting. Whatever the thing is, he looks a bit too cuddly to be creepy, but that's by today's standards. I think the black and white film treatment made the monster look super scary or possibly more believable back in the 1950's.  Don't you agree?

About the Classic Film: Creature from the Black Lagoon

This movie is one of the sci-fi classics. It had three sequels to this original which says something about its ability to generate dollars and repeatedly entertain fans--then and now. From IMDB storyline section, The Creature of the Black Lagoon is about, "A scientific expedition searching for fossils along the Amazon River discover a prehistoric Gill-Man in the legendary Black Lagoon. The explorers capture the mysterious creature, but it breaks free. The Gill-Man returns to kidnap the lovely Kay, fiancée of one of the expedition, with whom it has fallen in love."

Like King Kong, this film too has mass appeal with a storyline that featured a creature falling for a human. Good God even after all this time, that storyline--when done well -- doesn't get old.

A Remake of the Creature of the Black Lagoon?

Wouldn't he be cool?

There was at one time discussions to have remake of this classic film, but from what I last read it's still in the works. Universal has supposedly started this project selecting Director, Breck Eisner, and one of the screenplay writers is Gary Ross (whose father, Arthur Ross, was incidentally was one of the writers on the 1954 original film.)  Crazy huh? This movie has been in the works since 2008 (if not earlier) and I hate to say this, but from what I've read, I'm not sure it's going to happen. It seems to be in limbo hell. Oh, well. Maybe it wasn't meant to be.
