It's been far too long since I've featured a Creepy Classic. I'm such a slacker it's embarrassing. Life happens and that's my only excuse. The last book I was supposed to post on was H.G. Wells The Island of Dr. Moreau. I'll get to that at some point but today I want to feature Grimms' Fairy Tales: Hansel and Gretel. Since Halloween is almost here and magic and sorcery continues to have a foothold in my brain, I couldn't resist reading this classic again. I realize everyone recalls the creepy children's tale, but when was the last time you read it? Why do I ask? Well, because most original fairy tales (minus the Disney angle) are disturbingly dark--like I like it. Who doesn't want to eat little children? Muhwahhhh! Better yet, what parent hasn't thought about dropping their kids off in the middle of the forest to fend for themselves? Heh. Heh. Like I said, Hansel and Gretel wonderfully paints a freakishly good picture of what witches in classic literature represent: pure unadulterated evil. #lovedit!

Paramount Pictures is scheduled to release their take on the classic tale--Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters in early 2013. Check out the bad ass movie trailer below featuring Jeremy Renner (yum!) as Hansel and Gemma Arterton as Gretel. Damn, I hope Hollywood doesn't disappoint.

The movie looks good. Yes, thanks to Disney, most have forgotten that Grimm Fairy Tales were really GRIM!

I seriously can't wait for Witch Hunters. I was really hoping it would come out this year as I've been following it's production progress for a while. Sigh. Hansel and Gretel is definitely a creeptastic classic.

ReplyDeleteYou know, I always thought the kids had it coming. They *were* eating the old lady's house. And we only had their word for it that she wanted to eat them. The witch couldn't tell her side of the story, considering Gretel burnt her up in the oven.
The movie looks awesome. I like the Grimm tales, but for my kids I stick with the disney stuff. If they have nightmares I don't get to sleep either. :)

I saw this trailer not too long ago and I can't wait to see it! I'm not expecting anything fantastic, but a lot of kick a** action and special effects is fine by me. (:

ReplyDeleteThe movie does look good! And you're right about the original fairy tales. I don't know if I ever read H&G, but I did read Cinderella. It's sooo different than the Disney version. I mean, birds pecked out Cindi's step-sisters eyes! Pretty gruesome.

ReplyDeleteProfessor Tolkien noted that the old fairy stories are treated like old furniture -- something to be embarrassed about. But he knew that for the most part, they were not for children.
ReplyDeleteThe dialog in the movie trailer sounded disturbingly contemporary, so I'm not sure about it.

ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the Grimm Brothers' versions of fairytales. Disney is cute and good for little kids, but it's far from realistic and Disney promotes pretty shallow morals. Pretty girl meet pretty boy. They kiss and get married. End story.
ReplyDeleteReal life romances have ups and downs. It's impossible to truly appreciate the good without knowing how bad can be sometimes. I like the Little Match Girl - where she has but a glimpse of heat/warmth and the good things life can offer before she's thrusted back into reality and freezes to death.
On the same subject, how many children die every day from a lack of the bare necessities like shelter, food, and clean water. These children cherish the things we take for granted. It's a horrible feeling to not know how you will get your next meal. Or where you will sleep tonight. These are the things that the Grimm Brothers' fairytales make us think about.
I like Rapunzel and Rumpelstiltskin... they are the more popular ones!
